Black Butte is a small community in southern Siskiyou County, California, located directly adjacent to Interstate 5 between the cities of Mount Shasta to the south and Weed to the north. It takes its name from the imposing volcanic landmark that rises beside the freeway — a cluster of overlapping dacite lava domes forming a butte that is, geologically, a satellite cone of Mount Shasta. At 6,325 feet, the dome is one of the most recognizable features of the upper Sacramento River country and has served as a landmark for travelers and railroad crews for well over a century. The settlement at Black Butte grew out of the railroad.
