Bradley is a small, unincorporated community and census-designated place in southern Monterey County, California, situated on the Salinas River roughly 20 miles north of Paso Robles and 14 miles south-southeast of San Ardo. It lies where the Salinas Valley narrows toward the county's southern edge, a rural setting surrounded by ranchland and rolling hills. The settlement grew up around the Southern Pacific Railroad, which reached the area in October 1886 and established a station named for Bradley V. Sargent, the landowner of the rancho on which the community took root. For much of the twentieth century, U.S. Route 101 passed directly through town along what is now Bradley Road, following the alignment of the old Legislative Route 2 and the historic El Camino Real, making Bradley a stop for travelers moving through the Salinas Valley. Today the modern U.S. 101 freeway bypasses the community, and Bradley has settled into its role as a quiet residential outpost and a gateway to the recreation lakes to its west. Lake Nacimiento, an 18-mile reservoir on the Nacimiento River, and Lake San Antonio lie a short drive away, and the U.S. Army's Fort Hunter Liggett sits just to the west, contributing a military presence to the surrounding landscape. With a population of 69 at the 2020 census, Bradley is one of Monterey County's smaller communities. Its school-age children attend Bradley Elementary through the local Bradley Union School District. Residents value the area for its wide-open ranchland, its rural character, and its easy access to lake recreation, while Paso Robles and King City provide the nearest concentrations of services, shopping, and employment.
