Carmel Valley is an unincorporated community in Monterey County, California, set in the valley of the Carmel River east of State Route 1 and inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea. The term generally describes the entire watershed stretching from the coast into the foothills of the Santa Lucia Range, with the compact village of Carmel Valley Village serving as the area's commercial and social heart. The village reported 4,524 residents at the 2020 census, while the broader valley spreads across roughly 189 square miles of ranchland, vineyards, and open space. The valley's history reaches back to California's rancho era, when Spanish and Mexican land grants such as Rancho Cañada de la Segunda and Rancho Los Laureles divided the watershed.
