Rancho Cucamonga is a city in southwestern San Bernardino County, California, in the heart of the Inland Empire at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. The city was incorporated in 1977 from three long-established communities — Alta Loma, Cucamonga, and Etiwanda — each with roots in the region's citrus, grape, and olive agriculture and its place along historic Route 66. The name honors Cucamonga Peak, the 8,911-foot summit that rises directly above the city and frames its northern skyline. Today Rancho Cucamonga is home to roughly 177,000 residents across about 40 square miles, making it one of the largest cities in San Bernardino County. Its growth has been overwhelmingly master-planned: communities such as Terra Vista and Victoria Arbors set the template of landscaped subdivisions with parks, golf, and community amenities, and the city has long been regarded as one of the Inland Empire's more affluent and well-run suburbs. Victoria Gardens, an open-air regional shopping and entertainment district, anchors the commercial landscape, while the historic cores of the three founding towns preserve a sense of continuity. Culturally, Rancho Cucamonga keeps its Route 66 and winemaking heritage alive. The Cucamonga Service Station, a restored landmark and museum, recalls the city's place on the Mother Road, and the Cucamonga Valley wine region, once a major Southern California viticultural area, still supports operating wineries such as Galleano Winery and Joseph Filippi Winery. Education is served by the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, which operates Alta Loma, Etiwanda, Los Osos, and Rancho Cucamonga high schools, with several elementary districts — Alta Loma, Etiwanda, Cucamonga, and Central — covering the lower grades. Transportation is a growing strength: Metrolink's San Bernardino Line serves the city from its Rancho Cucamonga station, a shuttle links the station to Ontario International Airport, and a planned high-speed rail connection promises to deepen the city's regional role.
