Lake Elsinore is a city in Riverside County, California, in the Inland Empire region southeast of Los Angeles and north of Temecula. The city takes its name from the lake at its center — Lake Elsinore, the largest natural freshwater lake in Southern California, spanning roughly 3,000 surface acres with more than 14 miles of shoreline. Incorporated in 1888, the community has more than a century of history as a resort and recreation destination, once drawing visitors to lakeside mineral springs and hotels, and later becoming a commuter hub as the Inland Empire grew. The city's geography is defined by the lake and the surrounding hills and mountains. The historic downtown and Lake Edge District sit near the water, while residential neighborhoods climb into the foothills and spread along the I-15 corridor. The Ortega Highway (State Route 74) crosses the Santa Ana Mountains to the west, linking Lake Elsinore to Orange County. This setting gives the city a distinct identity within Riverside County — part lakeside recreation town, part inland suburb. The local economy combines retail, logistics, and services with a strong recreation and tourism component built around the lake. Roughly 72,000 residents live in the city, drawn by relatively attainable housing, outdoor access, and freeway connections to employment centers in the Inland Empire, Orange County, and San Diego. Lake Elsinore's population grew substantially as development moved inland from the coast, producing a mix of longtime lakeside residents, families, and commuters. Distinct districts such as Country Club Heights, with its steep hills and lake views, and newer master-planned areas reflect the city's layered development history, from early resort cottages to modern single-family neighborhoods.
