Fountain Valley is a suburban city in the northwestern corner of Orange County, California, bordered by Huntington Beach to the south and west, Westminster and Garden Grove to the north, and Santa Ana and Costa Mesa to the east. With a population of about 57,000, it is a quiet, largely residential community that grew rapidly in the decades after World War II as Orange County's farmland gave way to subdivisions. The city's defining public space is Mile Square Regional Park, a roughly 600-acre urban park at the heart of Fountain Valley. The land began as a naval outer landing field purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1942, and Orange County later developed the site into one of the region's largest regional parks, with lakes, golf courses, sports fields, and trails. Fountain Valley's name and identity are also tied to the agricultural history that preceded suburban development. Fountain Valley is a significant center of Vietnamese-American life. A large share of residents are of Vietnamese descent, and the city sits immediately south of Westminster and Garden Grove's Little Saigon district, the cultural and commercial heart of the Vietnamese diaspora. That heritage is reflected in the city's restaurants, markets, and community life. Public education is provided by four school districts, with the Fountain Valley School District serving kindergarten through eighth grade and older students attending area high schools. Housing in Fountain Valley was largely built out in the 1960s, giving the city a consistent mid-century suburban character of single-family homes on tidy lots. The combination of a large central park, established neighborhoods, and a strong community identity makes Fountain Valley a stable and sought-after Orange County suburb.
